Many of the forms and applications available throughout the World Wide Web are prepared in Portable Document Format (PDF). Adobe Systems has developed a product called Acrobat Reader which is designed to view these files. Adobe has plug-ins available for current browsers to view these files. You can fill these forms in, using Adobe's plug-in and then print the completed form.

    Individual Recognition Awards

    There are currently 31 different forms of recognition worn as embroided square knots.  Many designate service and tenure at a unit level while a few designate service at a district, council, or national level.  Others are awarded for specific service to Scouting and the community.

    The local council/district is the final authority in interpreting and approving all awards. Interpretation of the requirements for the various awards is the responsibility of the council/district committee or others as the award may require.

    Advancement Recognition worn as Square Knots
     
    The Arrow of Light award is earned by Webelos Scouts; however, the embroidered square knot can NOT be worn until the Scout becomes an adult leader.
    The Eagle Scout award is the highest rank a Boy Scout can earn.  The embroidered square knot is presented at the time the Scout receives his award, but can NOT  be worn until he becomes an adult leader. 

    The Quartermaster Award is the highest rank in the Sea Scouting program; however, the embroidered square knot can NOT be worn until the Sea Scout becomes an adult leader.
    The Explorer Gold or sometimes called the Explorer Achievement knot is usually awarded to Explorer Scouts for service, leadership, and tenure.  It must be earned before the Explorer turns 21 years old.
    The Silver Award, Venturing BSA, is earned by Venturers who have earned the Venturing Gold Award, at least one Bronze Award and completed other requirements. The embroidered square knot can NOT be worn until the Venturer becomes an adult leader.

    The Religious Emblem (adult) knot is earned by adults who fulfill the requirements set forth by their own religious denomination.  It is presented by the member's church and not the BSA.

    The Religious Emblem (youth) knot is earned by Scouts who fulfill the requirements set forth by their own religious denomination.  It is presented by the member's church and not the BSA.  This award (square knot) can be worn on the Scout's uniform and continue to be worn as an adult leader.

    Leadership Training Recognition

    The leadership training recognition plan is intended to honor demonstrated performance and tenure of trained leaders in all areas of the Scouting program directly involving units.

    Tenure used to earn one award cannot generally be used to earn another award.Some exceptions apply. Ask your unit leader, Commissioner, or Training Committee representative for a clarification.

    The local council/district is the final authority in interpreting and approving all awards. Interpretation of the requirements for the various awards is the responsibility of the council/district committee or others as the award may require.



     
    The Cub Scouter Award is earned by leaders who participate in the Cub Scouting program in non-specific capacities.

    The Den Leader Coach Award recognizes those leaders who provide  leadership to other den leaders within a pack.

    The Den Leader Award is designated for Cub Scout leaders and assistant leaders of Wolf and Bear dens.

    The Tiger Den Leader Award recognizes leaders who have provided leadership with the Tiger Cub program.

    The Pack Trainer Award was established September 1, 2006 and recognizes leaders who serve in the Pack Trainer position. Note: tenure and performance requirements for this award may not be met retroactively. You may begin earning this award on or after September 1, 2006. Download description.
    The Scouter's Training Award is designed for service in any or all of five different program areas of Scouting; Boy Scout Leader, Varsity Scout Leader, Roundtable Staff, Sea Explorer Leader, and Explorer Leader.

    The Sea Badge recognition is awarded to individuals who complete the Sea Badge Course, the advanced training for Sea Exploring leaders, similar to Wood Badge.
    The Professional Training Award is presented to professional Scouters.

    Additional Leadership Recognition

    The leadership training recognition plan is intended to honor demonstrated performance and tenure of trained leaders in all areas of the Scouting program directly involving units. Leaders who apply those lessons learned are eligible to be nominated for additional types of recognition.

    The local council/district is the final authority in interpreting and approving all awards. Interpretation of the requirements for the various awards is the responsibility of the council/district committee or others as the award may require.
     

    The District Award of Merit is presented annually for outstanding service at the District level. Only one award is authorized for every 25 units within a district.

    The Silver Beaver is presented annually for noteworthy service and leadership in the community at the District or Council level. Only one award is presented for every 60 units in a Council. Most recipients of this award have already received the District Award of Merit.

    The Silver Antelope is presented for service to youth at the regional level.
    The Silver Buffalo is presented each year to the Honorary President of the Boy Scouts of America along with others, both Scouters and non-Scouters for service to youth on a national basis or over a significant period of national service to a youth agency.
    The Silver World Award may be presented for exceptional character and distinguished service to youth on an international basis. US citizens may be considered only if they are NOT registered members of the BSA.
    The National President's Scoutmaster Award of Merit recognizes Scoutmasters who has served as a Scoutmaster for at least 18 months, achieved the Quality Unit Award, completed Scoutmastership Fundamentals, has a successful advancement and retention program, along with several other requirements.

    Training Keys are awarded to leaders who excel in one or more specific leadership roles.  Those roles are Scoutmaster, Commissioner, District Committee, Venturing Advisor, and Varsity Scout Coach.  This award was previously available to Exploring Team Leaders.

    The Distinguished Commissioner Service Award is earned by Commissioners who have actively served for not less than five years, have earned the Commissioner's Key and completed additional requirements.

    The Order of the Arrow Distinguished Service Award is presented to Arrowmen that have given for a significant period of time service to the Order of Arrow or to Scouting at any level beyond the local Lodge (which is part of the local Council) level.  Most Arrowmen receiving this award were youth members serving as leaders at the Sectional, Regional or National level.  Most adult Arrowmen receiving this award have served as Arrowmen for an extended period of time, normally more than ten years.  The award consists of a silver arrowhead with an arrow through it, suspended from a white ribbon with small red arrows centered on the ribbon throughout, a certificate and knot.

    The Heroism Medal is awarded for saving a life with little or no personal risk to the Scout. 
    The Honor Medal is the highest special award in Scouting.  It is awarded for saving a life at some personal risk, or to those who have died while attempting to save a life.  It may be presented with crossed gold palms for great personal risk.
    The Medal of Merit is awarded for an act of meritorious service above and beyond.  The action need not involve in saving a life, but must employ Scout skills in the execution.
    The William T. Hornaday Award recognizes a contribution to conservation.  The award has six different levels.  The knot may be worn by those earning the Bronze, Silver, or Gold medals only.

    The George Meany Award is presented to Scouters and union organizations for support given to the Scouting program.  Information can be obtained through any AFL-CIO office.
    The purpose of the Whitney M. Young, Jr. Service Award is to recognize outstanding services by an adult individual and/or organization by demonstrated involvement in Mr. Young's dream of justice and equality for all" in the development and implementation of Scouting opportunities for low-income, urban and rural youth by the Boy Scouts of America.  Only the awards presented to individuals wear the square knot.

    The James E. West Fellowship Award is a national recognition which honors the first Chief Scout Executive of the BSA and is awarded for contributions of $1,000.00 or more to the local council's endowment fund.

    The William D. Boyce New-Unit Organizer Award is presented to recognize volunteers who organize one or more traditional Scouting units. The award may be worn on the adult uniform. The award is a square knot placed over the three colors representing the three phases of our program—Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, and Venturing. A volunteer can earn the knot by organizing one traditional unit, and a program device can be earned for up to three additional units organized.
