ALL NEW!BSA Training On LineE-Learning Portal |
Fast Start training
is very basic. It is intended for anyone who's interested in the
program. By getting the very basic information to a wide audience in
an easy-to-use
format, the goal is that weâll be able to attract more prospective
adult volunteers in the program.
New Leader Essentials
is an appropriately-named course. It's brief (only 90 minutes), but packed
with material and led by trained staff. This course is intended for all new
leaders in all elements of the Scouting program (Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting,
and Venturing). In fact, NLE is intended to be delivered to new leaders from
all program elements at the same time. This course will familiarize you with
the basic concepts of Scouting that are common to all program elements, such
as values, uniforming, advancement, service to others, and so forth. PRE-REGISTRATION
IS REQUIRED!
Please remember that NLE is just the beginning of your BSA basic training curriculum. It's important to continue with training for your specific job in Scouting.
| Return to Outline |This course covers the basic elements of youth protection and the operation of a Scouting program that provides a safe environment for its youth members. The various forms of child abuse, how to recognize them and how to deal with them properly are discussed. Discussions of how to report incidents and your responsibilities as a leader are included.
It is highly recommended that all adults involved in Scouting periodically participate in a refresher course to maintain a current awareness of this important topic. However, please note that the policy of the MCBSA is that the requirement for repetition of Youth Protection Training is to be determined by program requirements (e.g., for participation on camp staff, a Philmont expedition, etc.). The MCBSA policy is otherwise no more stringent than that of the national council of the BSA.
If you are a Cub Scouter or Boy Scouter and you are interested in a package program that includes all of the basic training courses required for you to wear the Trained strip on your uniform, please download the registration form below that is appropriate for your Scouting position.

Multi-Program Training Programs |
The University is structured as an open institution with more flexible opportunities than you would usually find in Scouting training. The College of Adventuring Scouting Science is an interesting combination of courses for those who are into Scouting's "senior" level programs, and the challenges of an active high-adventure experience. The College of Boy Scouting Science provides an exciting variety of troop, patrol, and outdoor planning supplemental courses to help manage the challenges of a great troop experience. The College of Cub Scouting Science provides a wide variety of courses from pack administration to planning for an outdoor program.
In addition, the University also offers many general electives that cut across all the programs. Everything from diversity and special needs to using technology can be found in the Electives area.
All these are opportunities for gaining more knowledge on how to better serve our young people!
Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills
There's a new course
called Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills. This course is intended
for those adults who need to know basic outdoor skills: Scoutmasters and their
assistants; Webelos Leaders; and Venturing Advisors.
This course replaces
the outdoor skills portions of the old Scoutmastership Fundamentals. IOLS
provides hands-on instruction in the basic First Class outdoor skills, and
closely follows the presentation of those skills in the Boy Scout Handbook.
The emphasis is on developing a familiarity with basic outdoor skills and
being able to teach those skills to youth members: Boy Scouts, Webelos Scouts,
and Venturers.
This is a half-day awareness
seminar for adults in all phases of the Scouting program: Cub Scouting, Boy
Scouting, and Venturing. The agenda includes an introductory videotape
describing Leave No Trace ethics, and interactive round-robin presentations
based on the seven basic principles of LNT:
á
Plan Ahead and Prepare
á
Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces
á
Dispose of Waste Properly
á
Leave What You Find
á
Minimize Campfire Impacts
á
Respect Wildlife
á
Be Considerate of Other Visitors
In
the future, this material will be included as part of other courses that address
the outdoor program, such as Adult Basic Backpacking, Introduction to Outdoor
Leader Skills, Webelos Leader Outdoor Training, etc.
Adult
Basic Backpacking Course
This is an introductory
course designed to teach basic backpacking to adults with little or no backpacking
experience. The course will give an adult Scouter instruction in such
areas as: clothing, equipment, trail safety, trip planning, and other basic
information that will help leaders to begin backpacking treks with their units.
The course is held in four sessions and will include a backpacking overnight
experience. The trail selected will be of moderate difficulty.
Note:
participation in the outdoor portions of this course will require a completed
Class-3 Personal Health and Medical Record Form.
Wood
Badge for the 21st Century

on Leadership, not outdoor skills. |

Trainer Development Conference
The Trainer Development
Conference is part of a continuous process of updating trainers with the latest
training methods, principles, and technologies. The primary target of this
conference is Scouters who will be delivering training to leaders as well
as to youth members in all parts of the Scouting program.
Scouters responsible
for training may be members of district or council training teams who train
leaders in Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, and Venturing. They may also be Scouters
who train commissioners and district committees. They may be pack trainers.
This conference is designed to develop and improve the skills of both veteran
and prospective trainers.
The Trainer Development
Conference incorporates numerous contemporary training techniques and emphasizes
the importance of experiential learning, or "learning by doing."
The training sessions not only demonstrate good training methods, but give
participants an opportunity to interact and practice what they have learned.
An ongoing learning activity, the "BSA 500" game, is featured and
used continuously throughout the conference to emphasize and reinforce the
experiential learning.
This is a one-day course
with three sessions. Each district will be responsible for one session.
Topics will be covered in an open forum, with all districts sharing and participating.
Staff development will be done as needed within each district and the course
syllabus for a one-day Commissioner Basic Training session will be followed.
The Key Leader Workshop
is intended to meet the basic training needs of members of the District Committee
and the Council Executive Board. This offering is designed to result
in a well coordinated and dedicated group of Scouters committed to achieving
the mission of the MCBSA and its three districts: Battleground, Thunderbird
and Twin Lights. The workshop helps initiate a working relationship
between council and district personnel.
The agenda for this workshop
includes a description of the functions of district and council operations,
plus a variety of breakout sessions that provide an opportunity for interactive
discussion of the following areas: activities; advancement; camping; finance;
membership; and training.
Charter
Organization Representative Training
This course provides
a brief overview of the role and responsibilities of the Chartered Organization
Representative in the operation of a Scouting Program.
